More than a week after its President of Smartphone and Connected Devices Business resigned, HTC announced a restructuring of its business in the U.S.

In an email statement to Digital Trends, HTC confirmed rumors that some employees were retrenched to "align the businesses and empower the teams to share more resources".

“We have recently brought our smartphone and VR businesses under common leadership in each region,” an HTC spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “Today, we announced a restructure in North America for the HTC smartphone business that will centralize the reporting structure within the region. In doing so, there have been some employee reductions to align the businesses and empower the teams to share more resources.”

The merger of the phone and VR divisions in the U.S is said to have affected between a few dozen to "maybe 100" people according to sources of Digital Trends. While HTC has teased a new flagship phone for this year, it would not be a surprise to see the company exit the phone market in the U.S in a year or two.
